Description

The notion of identity in Jewish music is twofold: both the feeling of belonging to a community and the representation, the affirmation, the communication of that feeling... Like all itinerant or diaspora community music forms, popular Yiddish music has borrowed from the models and systems of the countries passed through. This successive appropriation of various forms and styles was synthesized, during centuries of exile, with their original music forms. In the long run it became a cultural peculiarity true to the composite originality of the musical ways of diaspora people.
